BTEC Grade Calculator Updated!

Looking for the old version of this script? A working backup is available here.

This tool allows you to work out your (potential) grade in your current BTEC course. This is an updated version of my previous tool which was made irrelevant by BTEC updating their marking scheme. Unfortunatly for all their students, this new marking system is 10 times more confusing than the old one which in turn makes it even harder to work out your potential overall grade for your course. Because of this, I decided to update my tool and make it as easy for you to use as possible.

The new BTEC grading system works like this:
Each course type has a total amount of credit that is spread out over multiple modules (a module may be worth 5, 10 or 20 credits). For example, a Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma course has 180 credits. You then get a certain amout of points for each module you pass. The amount of points you get for passing a module depends on which grade you achievec for said module(Pass, Merit, Distinction). The awarded points for each modules are then added up to give a BTEC score. This score is then compared to a marking grid and the BTEC averall grade is worked out.

Important!
The number of modules you are undertaking will vary from courses to courses and will depend on the individual value of each module. If you do not know the number of modules you are undertaking or the credit value for all your modules, you will have to find this out. While most modules will be 10 credits, there are some exceptions hence please ask your course leader or find your course in the BTEC course directory(once you find your course, this will be under documents->Specification) if you are unsure.

Finally, to use this tool you simply have to select which type of course you are on (currently only supporting LEVEL 3 BTEC) from the first drop down then select the amount of modules you are undertaking from the second dropdown box.
Fill in your grade (P for Pass, M for Merit, D for Distinction) and the credit value for each module in the freshly generated form that will have appeared below. Once you have thouroughly checked that ALL the infos are correct, simply click on "get my results" and they will magicaly appear on the right hand side of the form. Leave any questions or feedbacks at the bottom of this page :)
Enjoy!

Fixed a bug where the maximum grade could not be obtained. D*D*D* is now displayed instead of “FAILED” if score is 1590

Thank you to the people who have tried it out so far, you allowed me to see this bug.

Apologies for this, my website was recently hacked through a stupid security gap I had left on my hosting, things are therefore no longer working and I have lost a considerable amount of work. I fixed this however and it should work fine for you now :)

I’m a student from netherlands. The diploma i have gain in netherlands is equivalent here in uk to BTEC national. The problem i have is that In netherlads the grades are 1-10 ( 10 being the top mark). I would like to know if there is other way i can calculate my grades?

Thank you

    Hey su,
I am unaware of how the conversion would work, though if it’s any help I can tell you that a PPP (3 passes) equates to a 40% overall grade, which is the minimum pass grade. a 4 out of 10 in your home country would therefore be roughly the same as a PPP. From that I would venture a guess and say that a MMM (3 merits) would equate to a 6,5 or 7 out of ten and a DDD (3 distinctions) would equate to a 10 out of 10.

My teacher told me, I can afford to fail one unit out of 18 units is this true?

    Geoffrey says:

When I was doing my BTEC course 3 or 4 years ago, I was told that failing any of the core modules would automatically make me fail the course. I believe I had 6 core modules out of the 18, though I am not sure.

Though if I can give you my opinion, you should try to get at least a pass in all your modules, with a bit of work and dedication, a pass can easily be achievable and will be alot more useful to you in the future :).

I any case good luck to you, I hope I was helpful

Prakash I am in your class, we are doing 18 Units, you cannot drop any of the units, but you can replace the finance unit with another unit. :’)

HI Geoffrey,

i was wondering can u help me currently i was completing a extended dilpoma with 18 units and have gained 7 passes and 2 merits so far, But i attain all distinction in my final 9 module what ucas points will that leave me with and what overall grade..
thanks :)

    Geoffrey says:

    Hey Markus,

From what you told me, I see that you would be getting an overall grade of DDM (2 distinctions, 1 merit) which would equate to 320 UCAS points (which is a really good mark and would get you into most universities). That would however require you to achieve distinctions in your future 9 modules.

    Hope this helps ;)

thnaks a million Geoffrey
Would this be 100% accurate? if i put my mind to it i should be able to achieve it ;)plus i was sick in the first semester !!

    Geoffrey says:

Like I said in my post above I can’t guaranty the accuracy of this 100%, though I have had versions of this tool running since 2008 now and have only had good feedbacks from BTEC students. If you want to double check to to be sure I would recommend asking your course leader, though I have found some of them (the minority I hope) to be highly useless.

    Good luck to you !

Hi Buddy

Any chance you can release the source code so I can use it for my tutor group?

    Geoffrey says:

Hi there james, could I ask for what purpose you need the source code? Thanks :)

Hi mate

Basically, I’m a tutor at a College and I’d like to set this up for our BTEC students to use.

It’s a bit of a hassle for me to keep on calculating their current grades everytime. I’ll just set it up on a host and then pass them the URL so they can calculate their grades them selves.

James says:

I’d just like to host it perosnally that’s all and it’ll be interesting to show our Programming students how this works too.

if you get distinctions in all f the 19 units in a national extended diploma do you come out with 3 d*’s in the end?

BTEC Tutor says:

The best part of this is that it calculates the UCAS points as well as the grade.
I will pass the link on to all my students.

I would definitely like to see an App version too.

BTEC Tutor 2 says:

I too like that it calculates the UCAS points.

An App version would be a great idea to. If the source code for the calculator could be released then I could look into making one.
